Meeting Description:
The African Pragmatics Association, in conjunction with the Department
of English, University of Ibadan, Ibadan, Nigeria invites you to its
3rd conference at the University of Ibadan Campus from February 19 to
21, 2024 under the theme: “Pragmatics and global security.” This
conference will be a meeting of academics, students and public policy
makers worldwide whose interest lies in the contextually-grounded
language use and its interface attainment of peace and security in
Africa. Abstracts for papers, panels and posters on (but not limited
to) the following sub-themes are welcome.
*Pragmatics and resource/ identity-based conflicts
*Terrorism, violent extremism and pragmatics
*Discourse of human trafficking and forced labour
*Urban centres, organised crime and street language
*Discourse of food security
*Conflict, humanitarian crises and pragmatics
*Media, peacebuilding and pragmatics
*Literature, security and pragmatics
*Social media, peacebuilding and pragmatics
*Misinformation, disinformation, peacebuilding and pragmatics
*Protest culture, peacebuilding and pragmatics
*Sexual minorities, peacebuilding and pragmatics
*Electoral conflicts and pragmatics
*Phonology, peacebuilding and security
*Religion, peacebuilding and pragmatics
*Civil society, peacebuilding and pragmatics
*Public health, security and pragmatics

Call for Papers:
Submission guidelines
Format for submissions and paper presentation details
- Individual papers and posters: 200-250 words
- Proposal for panels: 500 words
- All submissions should be made in Times New Roman, 12pt.
- Paper presentations will be for 20 minutes followed by a 10-minute
discussion
- There will be 120 minutes for each panel
Proposals for panels
Proposals for panels should include:
- Title of the panel
- Convener
- Proposed panellist(s)
- Discussant (if necessary)
- Language (if different from English)
The language of the conference is English (but panels may be organized
in other languages e.g. Kiswahili, Arabic, French, German, Portuguese,
or other regional languages). All submissions should be sent via Easy
Chair.

- International participants $100 (early bird), $120 (late/on-site
registration)
- African participants $80 (early bird), $95 (late/on-site
registration)
- Local participants N30,000 (early bird), N35,000 (late/on-site
registration)
- International students $70 (early bird), $80 (late/on-site
registration)
- African students $30 (early bird), $40 (late/on-site registration)
- Local students N10,000 (early bird), N15,000 (late/on-site
registration
Venue
The conference will be blended, in other words, for those who plan to
attend physically, it will be held at the Subomi Balogun Conference
Centre, University of Ibadan, Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria; and for
those who cannot make it to Ibadan, it will be virtual.
