Description:
The Linguistics and English Language Department in the School of
Philosophy, Psychology and Language Sciences is seeking a Postdoctoral
Researcher on a full time, fixed term basis for 32 months. This post
is expected to commence in March 2024.
We are recruiting a postdoctoral researcher with expertise in the
experimental study of language, to contribute to the project “Language
learning, communication and the emergence of phonotactic constraints”,
funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (Principal
Investigator: Prof. Mits Ota; Co-Investigator: Prof. Kenny Smith). The
project investigates how language learning and communication account
for the presence of phonotactic constraints in language. In
collaboration with the other project team members, the postdoctoral
researcher will be responsible for implementing the study design as
articulated in the grant application.
The main responsibilities are to:
- Design, develop and refine experiments involving word learning,
lexical identification, and communication. You will be required to
prepare experimental stimuli and edit experiment code (in
Javascript/jsPsych) as necessary, run adult and infant participants
through a series of studies, summarise and undertake complex
statistical analyses of data using established and novel methods to an
acceptable standard for publication in peer-reviewed journals.
(Approx. 50% of time).
- Contribute to writing manuscripts for publication. (Approx. 30% of
time).
- Keep up to date with ongoing research associated with the project,
and develop, accumulate and maintain knowledge of the scientific
literature relevant to the field. (Approx. 10% of time).
- Maintain accurate records of research data and administrative
paperwork. (Approx. 10% of time).
Your skills and attributes for success:
- A PhD in Linguistics, Cognitive Science, Psychology, or related
disciplines (pending assumed completed can be considered).
- Experience of data collection with human participants.
- Programming skills related to experiment design and stimulus
presentation for online experiments.
- Knowledge of statistical analysis of experimental data using R,
Python, or equivalent programming languages.
- An up-to-date knowledge of the current literature on word learning,
phonotactics, and/or iterated learning.
- The ability to prepare manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed
journals.
