Subject: Survey Invitation: Exploring Perceptions of Negative Modal Auxiliaries in English
Dear Linguists
We are conducting a study on the usage and acquisition of negative
modal auxiliary verbs in English, focusing particularly on their
epistemic (inference) uses. These verbs, including 'can't',
'wouldn't', and 'may not', vary in their degrees of certainty. Our
research aims to explore how native English speakers (L1) and English
learners (L2) perceive these degrees of certainty in the negative
forms of modal auxiliaries.
Your participation in this study would be invaluable. The survey,
which should take approximately 10 minutes, involves rating sentences
that contain auxiliary verbs. It consists of two scenarios, each
followed by six sentences, totaling twelve items.
Additionally, there are a few brief questions about your age, gender,
and first language.
Here is the link to the survey:

Your contribution is greatly appreciated and will significantly aid
the success of our research.
Thank you very much!
