The aim of this edited volume is to examine political discourse in the
Cognitive Linguistics framework, figurative language in particular.
“Thinking Politically” builds upon the online workshop “Political
Language in Motion” that took place in January 2023 and the theme
session “Political Discourse in Transformative Times” that was
organized at the “7th Figurative Thought and Language Conference” in
Genova. The volume intends to document and advance the discussion
initiated in these meetings by inviting researchers working in this
area to contribute to the proposed volume. The volume invites
proposals on various issues of political discourse and figurative
language; “political”, broadly defined, covers issues from traditional
political communication, to social media, artificial intelligence,
war, climate change, to name a few. Figurative language aims to cover
topics related to metaphor, metonymy, irony, hyperbole, and other less
commonly researched figures, as well as the interaction between these
figures. Investigating the figurative language of political discourse
in this collective volume is expected to thoroughly examine and reveal
how underlying cognitive processes shape political discourse and
therefore affect political reasoning.
