Subject: Native Speakers of Belizean Kriol Needed for Study
I am a linguistics PhD student at Indiana University, Bloomington in
Indiana, United States. I am working on the phonetics and phonology of
Caribbean creole languages with a specified interest in Belizean
Kriol. I am developing a study that will look at the sound systems
currently used by Belizean Kriol (BK) speakers. In particular, I am
investigating where and when glides appear following a
syllable-initial oral stop.
The research goal is to create a description of BK speech that will
complement studies of other Caribbean creole languages. I wish to
bring Belize's particular creole to more attention, as it is vastly
understudied in the literature. The goal is to gather data from native
Belizean Kriol-speaking students and faculty (and hopefully from
family and friends) by eliciting spoken data from word lists, word
games, and natural speech. This would be done either in person or
online, dependent upon various factors.
I am hoping to find potential participants for my study. Participants
will remain anonymous. Any native Belizean Kriol speaker is invited to
participate regardless of current residence. Said study would be
conducted in spring 2024 and require approximately an estimated hour
of commitment. If you or anyone you know is a native speaker, I would
be incredibly grateful for you or their participation in this project.
