Associate Professor in Linguistics
The Faculty of Humanities at the University of Bergen invites
applications for a permanent position as Associate Professor in
Linguistics at The Department of Linguistic, Literary and Aesthetic
Studies. The start date for the position is August 1st, 2024. We are
seeking a linguist with a strong computational profile (e.g., corpus
linguistics, use and creation of digital language resources,
quantitative analysis of linguistic data) who is able to teach
programming for linguistic purposes as well as topics in general
linguistics.
The department employs an academic staff of 80, 15 administrative
staff, and about 40 PhD students and 7 postdocs. The department offers
programs in Art History, Classical Philology, Comparative Literature,
Digital Culture, Linguistics, Norwegian as a Second Language, Old
Norse Philology, Scandinavian Studies, Theatre Studies and Norwegian
language courses for international students and employees at the
University of Bergen.
The four permanent faculty members in Linguistics offer teaching on
bachelor’s, master’s and PhD levels, and contribute to the programme
in Cognitive Science. Research in Linguistics at the department
focuses on sign languages, corpus methods, digital language resources,
experimental psycholinguistics, statistics and machine learning.
Positioned as a national hub for digital language resources, our
research group on Language Models and Resources (LaMoRe) builds and
operates research data infrastructures, particularly for treebanks
(INESS), and coordinates a national research infrastructure for
language (CLARINO). We also manage large collections of data for
Norwegian (Språksamlingene) and do lexicographic research and
development.
Work tasks/research field:
The position comprises teaching, research, dissemination and
administrative components. The successful candidate will teach and
supervise students in the field of Linguistics and take part in the
development of curricula in this field.
The successful applicant will take part in teaching according to
current study regulations. Work tasks include teaching, supervision
and assessment of students at all levels and in all programs relating
to Linguistics. As part of their regular work duties employees may be
required to teach, supervise or carry out exam-related work within
their field of competence outside their own department.
The successful applicant will have the right and duty to conduct
research within their own specialty and will also be assigned some
academic administrative work. The successful candidate will be
expected to assume an active role in project development, attraction
of external funding and dissemination.
The successful candidate’s required workplace will be at the
University of Bergen, to participate in the day-to-day operations of
the department and to comply with the guidelines that apply to the
position at all times.
Qualifications and personal qualities
The applicant must have relevant research competence in Linguistics or
relevant field, corresponding to the level of a Norwegian PhD.
Applicants must have published research on a high international level
within Linguistics beyond their doctoral thesis. It is an advantage to
have taken part in research collaboration and international
cooperation. Experience from research leadership and research
communication will also be given weight. Experience with initiating
research projects and securing external research funding is a plus.
