Description:

Position Summary:
The School of Languages & Linguistics invites applications for a
tenure-track appointment at the Assistant Professor rank to begin
August 2024. We seek a broadly trained faculty member with teaching
and research expertise in American Sign Language (ASL). This position
is a continuing, tenure-track, 9-month appointment to start August 16,
2024. Tenure will be housed in the School of Languages & Linguistics.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will contribute to the ASL program which
currently offers an undergraduate minor in ASL and to the Linguistics
program which offers an undergraduate degree in Linguistics with an
optional ASL Linguistics track. Teaching is primarily at the
undergraduate level but may also include graduate courses. The
position includes teaching, maintaining a record of scholarly research
and publication appropriate to the discipline, supporting student
research, advising and mentoring students, and engaging in service
activities appropriate to academic rank. The typical teaching load for
untenured TT faculty in the School is two courses per semester.

Minimum Qualifications:
Doctoral degree in ASL, Deaf Education/Studies, Linguistics, Sign
Language Interpreting, Language Acquisition/Education or other
appropriate field. ABD applicants will be considered if all
requirements for the PhD will be completed by August 15, 2024. If all
requirements are not completed by August 15, 2023, a term, non-tenure
track appointment may be offered in accordance with University policy
(https://policies.siu.edu/personnel-policies/chapter2/ch2
-faps/conting.php).
Candidate must provide evidence of and/or potential to develop a
strong program of independent research focused on ASL, ASL
Linguistics, and/or Deaf Studies. Candidate must also provide evidence
of ability/potential to teach ASL through at least three levels of
instruction (beginning to advanced) plus additional content courses to
supplement that instruction. This position requires demonstrated,
native or near-native proficiency in ASL and proficiency in written
English.

Preferred Qualifications:
Preference will be given to candidates with an established research
program focused on the Linguistics of ASL, additional expertise in
sign languages other than ASL, demonstrated excellence in teaching
college-level ASL, and/or corpus-based research on sign languages.
Deaf candidates are especially encouraged to apply.
