Description:
Assistant Professor, Departments of Applied Linguistics and Women's,
Gender, and Sexuality Studies
The College of the Liberal Arts at the Pennsylvania State University
invites applications for a tenure-track joint appointment at the
Assistant Professor rank in the departments of Applied Linguistics and
Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies (WGSS) to begin Fall 2024.
We are seeking interdisciplinary scholarly expertise in feminism,
queer studies, and applied linguistics, broadly conceived. Both
departments emphasize the intersections of race, gender, sexuality,
social class, power, and linguistic identities in diverse contexts. As
the strength of the Department of Applied Linguistics is a collective
commitment to the study of language and discourse in diverse
sociocultural contexts, and the emphasis in Women’s, Gender, and
Sexuality Studies lies in interdisciplinary feminist inquiry, we are
especially interested in candidates who bridge these scholarly
orientations.
Applicants will have a Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics; Women’s, Gender,
and Sexuality Studies; or a related field at time of appointment.
Outstanding evidence of research potential and a record of teaching
excellence are required. Candidates must be theoretically and
methodologically grounded in scholarship that overlaps within the
fields of Applied Linguistics and Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality
Studies. They should demonstrate experience with and commitment to
inclusive pedagogies.
In addition, successful candidates must either have demonstrated a
commitment to building an inclusive, equitable, and diverse campus
community, or describe one or more ways they would envision doing so,
given the opportunity.
The teaching load is two courses per semester (2-2), with one course
each semester in each department. The Assistant Professor will be
expected to teach core interdisciplinary undergraduate and graduate
courses in WGSS, along with core undergraduate courses and graduate
seminars in Applied Linguistics and ensure that all teaching and
mentoring is grounded in inclusive pedagogies.
The Assistant Professor will also play a defining role in the ongoing
development of the Applied Linguistics undergraduate major and in
teaching and mentoring in the dual-title Ph.D. program with Applied
Linguistics and WGSS. Service commensurate with the rank of assistant
professor is expected.
