Description:
The Department of Comparative Language Science at the University of
Zurich invites applications for a permanent Lecturer position in the
Mathematical Foundations of Language (Canton of Zurich payscale 21,
100% FTE).
Your responsibilities:
The successful candidate is expected to closely collaborate with and
support members of the department and the NCCR Evolving Language.
About 30% of the position is devoted to teaching, both in his/her
specific areas of expertise and in general statistical methods. The
department's main everyday language is English, but lecturers are
expected to acquire conversational knowledge of German within two
years. Teaching can be in English or German.
Your profile:
The main focus of the position is on the stochastic processes that
underlie language change/phylogeny, language acquisition/ontogeny, and
language comprehension/production. The ideal candidate has additional
expertise and interest in one or more other branches of mathematics
that are relevant for language - including, but not limited to,
information theory, measure theory, set theory, complexity theory
(especially formal language theory), or graph theory.
What we offer:
The department places great emphasis on teamwork and multidisciplinary
perspectives. Excellent communication and collaboration skills are
essential. The department is strongly committed to diversity and, in
particular, strongly encourages female candidates to apply.
Start of employment:
The position is meant to start April 1, 2024, or later.
Applications include a statement on the candidate's vision for the
position in terms of collaboration, support, and teaching strategies
(max 2 pages, not counting references), and a full CV in a single PDF
document.
The committee will start reviewing applications by January 15, 2024.
We consider applications until the position is filled.
