Description:
A funded PhD position is available in the project “Linguistic
complexity in the marking of new information” at the Department of
Linguistics, University of Alberta, Canada. The position will be
funded via Graduate Research/Teaching Assistantship stipends according
to the university’s funding rates (see:
https://www.ualberta.ca/linguistics/graduate/funding.html) for four
years starting September 01, 2024.
The selected applicant will conduct PhD research on the interaction
between components of grammar in the marking of new information and
other aspects of information structure in Mandarin under the
supervision of Dr. Anja Arnhold. With her guidance, the selected
applicant will carry out empirical studies on this topic, including
co-designing experiments, developing materials, collecting and
analyzing data, publishing and communicating results.
The successful applicant must be accepted into the department’s
graduate program and is expected to obtain a doctorate from the
University of Alberta.
Required qualifications:
- Native or near-native command of Mandarin Chinese
- Strong background in morphology, syntax, phonetics or phonology
- Interest in experimental linguistics research
- Willingness to learn skills needed at all stages of experimental
linguistics research as listed above, including working with software
for acoustic annotation and measurements (Praat) and statistical
analysis (R) (previous experience will be a plus, but is not required)
