Description:
The Department of Linguistics at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa
invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position in
Austronesian languages and linguistics to begin Fall 2024, pending
position clearance and availability of funds. Seeking outstanding
applicants whose research and teaching specialization in Austronesian
will contribute to the department’s strong commitment to language
sustainability and diversity in the Pacific, Asia and beyond; study of
language through data-driven methods, including experimental,
documentary, and computational approaches; and emphasis on community
engagement in language work. The University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa offers
MA and PhD degree programs in Linguistics, as well as an
interdisciplinary BA. For more information, see:

We welcome applications from populations historically underrepresented
in the academy, especially members of Austronesian language
communities. We also seek applicants who will contribute to excellence
in teaching and mentoring students from diverse backgrounds.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Develop and teach undergraduate/graduate courses in the designated
area of specialization and in general areas based on the needs of the
department.
- Supervise and mentor graduate and undergraduate students.
- Serve on department committees, including chairing graduate
committees.
- Conduct and publish original scholarly research in an area of
specialization.
- Pursue opportunities for external funding.
- Enhance our departmental commitment to the study of Austronesian
languages, including convening of dedicated research groups and
international meetings.
- Contribute service at the department, college, university, and
community levels.
- Other duties as assigned by the Department Chair.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Doctorate or equivalent in Linguistics, Anthropology, Applied
Linguistics, Indigenous Language Revitalization or related field from
a college or university of recognized standing. (ABDs will be
considered; all requirements for doctoral degree must be completed by
August 2024).
- Experience, expertise, and evidence of an active research program
in Austronesian languages and linguistics.
- Demonstrated lived experience in an Austronesian language
community.
- Evidence of successful relevant teaching experience.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively and collegially.
Desirable Qualifications:
- Expertise in one or more other areas that will broaden or enhance
the strengths of our linguistics community, including but not limited
to: language revitalization/reclamation, language policy, language
documentation, language acquisition, historical linguistics,
computational and experimental methods.
- Expertise in Oceanic languages.
- Demonstrated excellence in teaching, training, and supervision of
graduate and undergraduate students.
- Record of and/or demonstrated commitment to securing external
funding.
- Demonstrated commitment to stewarding community-based research
programs in Austronesian languages.
- Evidence of engagement with diversity, equity, inclusion, and
accessibility in research, the classroom, and/or service.
