The Department of Linguistics at the University of Alberta invites
applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant
Professor in Experimental Phonetics, with an anticipated starting date
of July 1, 2024.
We welcome applications from candidates with expertise in experimental
phonetics and laboratory methods for the study of acoustics, speech
production, and/or speech perception. Applications are sought from
candidates with a specialisation in acoustic phonetics, articulatory
phonetics, auditory phonetics, sociophonetics, language processing,
language acquisition, or another area of phonetics which complements
the existing expertise at our department. The successful applicant
will have the opportunity to direct and re-envision the Alberta
Phonetics lab, one of several experimental research laboratories
housed in the Department, and will be expected to contribute to our
lively research culture through collaborative research and
(co-)supervision of undergraduate and graduate student research
projects.
The normal teaching load in the Department is four courses per year,
two per semester. The successful candidate will also be expected to
supervise graduate students at the Masters and PhD levels. Duties also
include service to the Department, Faculty, and University. Salary
will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Minimum qualifications
Applicants must have:
- a PhD in linguistics with a specialization in an area of phonetics.
ABD applicants will be considered only if there is strong evidence
that the • PhD will be completed by July 1, 2024
- evidence of an active research program in experimental phonetics
demonstrated through research publications, conference presentations,
and clear plans for future development
- a track record of work with laboratory techniques for studying
acoustics, speech production, perception, processing and/or
acquisition involving human participants, including electromagnetic
articulography, palatography, ultrasound, eye-tracking, and EEG
- a track record in securing research funding, as appropriate for
candidate’s stage of career
- evidence of successful teaching and mentorship, as appropriate for
candidate’s stage of career
- experience with advanced methods of statistical analysis, including
the ability to teach statistics
- the ability to teach acoustic phonetics, including spectral
analysis
