Crosslinguistic Perspectives on Partitivity and Related Phenomena
Call for Papers:
Crosslinguistic perspectives on partitivity and related phenomena
Invited speaker: Bert Le Bruyn (Utrecht University)
(In)definiteness and kind reference in partitives and beyond
Workshop convenor: Mihaela Tănase-Dogaru (University of Bucharest)
The part-whole relation represents an exceptionally complex issue.
This complexity, which is apparent at many different levels of
linguistic analysis (typological, syntactic, semantic, pragmatic and
sociolinguistic), has been the focus of extensive research over the
past years, within the standard generative framework.
In an attempt at shedding some new light on the current analyses of
(pseudo)partitive constructions at a crosslinguistic level, we invite
papers that tackle (but are not limited to) one of the following
aspects:
o the morpho-syntax of partitive elements: partitive articles,
quantifiers, partitive case inflections, the so-called ‘bare’
partitives, etc.;
o the typology and possible classifications of (pseudo)partitive
constructions;
o the semantics of (pseudo)partitive constructions;
o the pragmatic / sociolinguistic analysis of partitive
constructions – the tendency towards feminization apparent in
(agreement mismatches in) superlative and quantified partitives;
o the acquisition path of partitives;
o the morpho-syntax and interpretation of the interaction
between bare nouns and partitive constructions;
o the morpho-syntax and interpretation of the interaction
between differential object marking and (pseudo)partitive
constructions;
o the issue of silent elements present in the underlying
structure of (pseudo)partitives;
o re-analyzing cardinal-noun constructions as (pseudo)partitive
constructions;
o re-analyzing what-of exclamatives as (pseudo)partitive
constructions;
o grammaticalization paths of nominals occupying the first slot
in the binominal structure
o various translation strategies for (pseudo)partitive
constructions.
Anonymous abstracts (TNR 12, single-spaced, 2 pages max., references
included) should be sent to mihaela.dogaru at lls.unibuc.ro by October 15
2023.
A selection of the papers will be published in a thematic volume.
