Meeting Description:
We are very pleased to announce the 7th International Symposium on
Functional Linguistics (SILF), which will take place at the Faculty of
Languages, Literature, and Linguistics at the Federal University of
Minas Gerais, in Brazil, between September 4th and 6th 2024. The theme
of this edition of SILF is “New directions for classical themes in
functionalism”. With this theme, we seek to bring together studies
that discuss the tension between tradition and innovation in
functionalist linguistic research, in order to encourage not only the
establishment of dialogue and interfaces with areas still only timidly
explored by functionalists, but also to revisit themes that still lack
answers and that, through new methods, can be explored in new
directions. The event is organized in ten thematic axes:
Text-discourse organization
Language and grammar teaching
Typology and linguistic diversity
Construction Grammar
Variation and Change
Cognition and Usage-based models
Discourse and social interaction
Description and functional analysis of natural languages
Computational applications and interfaces
Language, Society, and Linguistic Policies
Confirmed plenary speakers:
John Du Bois (University of California, Santa Barbara)
Natalia Levshina (Radboud University)
Lilián Guerrero (National Autonomous University of Mexico)
Riccardo Giomi (University of Amsterdã)
Thaïs Cristófaro Silva (Federal University of Minas Gerais)
Adriana Silvina Pagano (Federal University of Minas Gerais)
