Meeting Description:

Short workshop at DGfS 2025 in Mainz, Germany.

Speakers frequently use instances of metalanguage like quotation to
talk about certain aspects of language. Compare sentence (1a) to the
instance of pure quotation in (1b).

(1) a. Kassel is a city in Hesse.
        b. “Kassel” has two syllables.

While the word Kassel in (1a) refers to the city itself, a linguistic
property of the quoted word Kassel is denoted in (1b). In theories of
quotation, at least four distinct categories of quotation are
identified: pure quotation, direct and indirect quotation (i.e.,
speech reports), and mixed quotation (i.e., a blend of direct
quotation and indirect report). In recent literature, unifying
accounts for the different types of quotation have been proposed (cf.
Härtl & Schlechtweg, 2023). We believe that free indirect discourse
(FID), among other linguistic phenomena, provides an excellent testing
ground for such accounts, as FID has been analyzed as a type of mixed
quotation (Maier, 2015) involved in narrations alongside other
quotation types. Our workshop is an opportunity to bring together
different perspectives on quotation typology and promote the exchange
between researchers in the field of quotation. Our workshop aims to
investigate the following questions:
 • Empirical evidence for a unified account: What empirical evidence
supports the notion of a unified account of quotation?
 • Integration of analyses: How can different analyses of quotations
align using evidence from negation, cancellation, or at-issueness? Are
there overarching frameworks that can accommodate various types of
quotation?
 • Interpretation of quotation and FID: How are quotations interpreted
(e.g., in narrative texts)? Are there cross-linguistic differences in
the interpretation of quotations?

We particularly invite empirically working scholars investigating
quotational phenomena and the boundary between use and mention to
submit papers for this workshop. Explorations aiming at combining
different types of quotation are of special interest.

Workshop organizers:
 • Peter Hofmann, University of Kassel
 • Natascha Raue, University of Kassel

Invited speaker:
 • Philippe De Brabanter (Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB))

Important notes about DGfS 2025:

The short workshop is part of the annual meeting of the German
Linguistics Society (DGfS 2025) from March 4 - 7 at the University of
Mainz, Germany. DGfS 2025 features 15 workshops and four plenary talks

Saarland)) as well as satellite events and a social program.

All participants must register for the conference and pay the
conference fee (30-130€ depending on registration date and status).
Participants may only present at one of the workshops of the
conference. However, they can be named as (co-)authors for talks at
other workshops.

Please find the detailed program and more information on the official
