Meeting Description:
The aim of this conference is to provide a platform for and to
stimulate discussions on linguistic politeness in multilingual
settings. Indeed, in the flourishing field of politeness research,
linguistic politeness is commonly examined from a monolingual
perspective. This conference is intended to introduce a complex
multilingual perspective to politeness research.
The overarching question we propose to address in this conference is
to what extent linguistic politeness resides within a particular named
language, and to what extent it belongs to cultural norms that
transcend linguistic boundaries. The choice of a language in a
particular speech act can, in itself, be a matter of (im)politeness.
In a multilingual speech community, we usually observe the
distribution of language use over different domains or types of
communicative situations, with some overlap. When more than one
language is appropriate in a particular context, how do the different
conventions of politeness in these languages interact? How is
politeness realized in free-range language settings, where boundaries
between language are blurred?
We warmly welcome and encourage papers and panels that are related to
politeness in multilingual contexts. Researchers working in fields
such as linguistics (sociolinguistics, pragmatics etc.), linguistic
anthropology, cultural anthropology, sociology and psychology are
particularly welcomed. We also believe that analysis of minority,
diaspora, heritage languages and field-work findings can be especially
informative for multilingual politeness. We appreciate research on
bilingual written texts in connection with politeness. We particularly
value advancements in politeness theory that address the complexities
and dynamics of multilingual speakers and communities.
Possible topics include, but are not limited to, the study of:
• Variation and change of linguistic politeness in multilingual
settings
• Politeness and code-switching/code mixing
• Politeness among bi/multilingual speakers
• Politeness in bi/multilingual speech communities
• Politeness in multilingual interactions or communicative situations
• Overarching conventions of linguistic politeness and structural
limitations of languages
• Politeness in bilingual education
Proposals on topics other than the ones listed here are also welcome
as long as they adhere to the conference's general theme.
