Meeting Description:
The fifth edition of the South Asian Forum on the Acquisition and
Processing of Language (SAFAL) will continue to provide a platform for
the exchange of research on sentence processing, computational
modelling, corpus-based psycholinguistics, neurobiology of language,
and child language acquisition, among others, in the context of the
subcontinent's linguistic landscape.
This is an in-person conference which is being held jointly with the
Annual Conference of Cognitive Science (ACCS-11:
https://www.hss.iitb.ac.in/accs2024/) at IIT Bombay.
Invited Talks
(a) Prof. Maria Teresa Guasti
Professor of Linguistics and language acquisition, Psychology Dept.,
Università degli Studi Milano-Bicocca, Milan, Italy
Prof. M. T. Guasti studies language acquisition in different
populations of children (monolingual, bilingual, children with
cochlear implant, with specific language disorders, with dyslexia and
with autism). She is interested in the interface between
phonology-syntax, the acquisition of morphosyntax, semantics and
pragmatics. She also researches on the relation between musical rhythm
and language and between language and writing.

(b) Prof. Ulrich Sauerland
Head, Research Area 4 ‘Semantics and Pragmatics’, ZAS, Berlin, Germany
Prof. Sauerland has an honorary adjunct professorship at the
University of Potsdam since 2018. The central question of Uli
Sauerland's research is how people give meaning to sentences. He
integrates results from language acquisition, field research and other
sources to develop mathematically explicit models of this human
ability. His expertise has helped to improve the diagnosis of speech
disorders and the comprehensibility of medical guidelines.
