University or Organization: Yale University
Department: East Asian Languages and Literatures
Job Location: New Haven, CT, USA

Job Title: Lector/Senior Lector I, Japanese
Job Rank: Instructor

Specialty Areas: Not Applicable

Required Language(s): Japanese (jpn)

Description:

The Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures at Yale
University seeks a Lector/Senior Lector I in Japanese language with a
3-year full-time appointment starting on July 1, 2025 and continuing
until June 30, 2028. Renewal is contingent on excellent performance
and sufficient enrollments. Primary duties include teaching six
courses or the equivalent per year, which can be realized through
teaching five term courses in the language sequence with a sixth
equivalent of effort in, for example, administration and course
coordination.

Salary and rank are commensurate with experience and qualifications.
If the initial appointment is at the rank of Lector, a promotion
review for Senior Lector I must take place in the fifth year or
earlier. Senior lectors at Yale are expected to participate in
teaching-related professional activities (e.g., workshops, seminars,
training activities, conferences) and have no limits on reappointment,
provided there is successful performance and ongoing curricular need.

Lectors are eligible for Yale’s generous package of benefits,
including health coverage, and they are encouraged to participate in
the wide range of professional development opportunities offered
through the Center for Language Study, the Poorvu Center for Teaching
and Learning, and the Faculty of Arts and Sciences Dean’s Office.

Applicants must have: 1) native or near-native fluency in Japanese; 2)
a bachelor’s degree or the equivalent, by the time of hire. It is
strongly preferred that applicants have: 1) experience teaching
Japanese in a U.S. university or equivalent to heritage and
non-heritage learners, using current teaching methodologies; 2) M.A.
or Ph.D., by the time of hire, in second-language pedagogy, Japanese
language/linguistics, applied linguistics, or other related field.
Experience in curriculum development and incorporating technology in
the classroom is desirable. Research profile in foreign language
pedagogy is a plus.

Please submit a letter of application, a CV, a statement of teaching
philosophy (not to exceed one page), three confidential letters of
recommendation, evidence regarding teaching effectiveness (e.g.,
course evaluations or supervisor reviews), a sample syllabus (or other
relevant teaching materials), and any additional relevant material
online at Interfolio: http://apply.interfolio.com/152585. Review of
applications will begin October 21, 2024. Initial interviews will be
held via Skype or Zoom, with finalists invited for campus visits. If
you do not have a free dossier account with Interfolio, you will be
prompted to create one during the application process. Assistance is
available from Interfolio’s Customer Support – help at interfolio.com or
call (877) 997-8807. Email inquiry may be addressed to
