Linguistic Field(s): Sociolinguistics

Call Deadline: 31-Jan-2025

Meeting Description:

The study of migration has gained unprecedented prominence as global
conflicts, economic disparities, climate change, and shifting borders
continue to drive displacement worldwide. While migration research has
expanded significantly, particularly in Europe, it remains fraught
with ethical and methodological challenges. These include questions of
representation, power dynamics, and the responsibilities of
researchers working with vulnerable populations. This conference seeks
to address these challenges by exploring the role of reflexivity and
the use of arts-based methodologies in migration research. We aim to
foster interdisciplinary dialogue and promote innovative approaches
that center the voices and experiences of migrants while critically
reflecting on the practices and assumptions of researchers.

Call for Papers:

Abstract Submission

 • Each abstract should not exceed 300 words (incl. at least four
keywords and references).
 • Text should be justified and single-spaced (font size: Times New
Roman 12pt).
 • Name, affiliation, and e-mail address should be on separate first
page of the electronic copy.
 • Every individual presentation will last 20 minutes (plus 10 minutes
for discussion and questions).

Conference Themes:

We invite submissions that engage with the following themes:

•Reflexivity and Positionality in Migration Research. How can
researchers critically examine their roles, assumptions, and ethical
responsibilities when engaging with migrant communities?
•Collaborative and Participatory Research Methods. Approaches that
involve migrants as active participants or co-researchers, emphasizing
shared ownership and decision-making in the research process.
•Arts-Based Methodologies. The use of creative methods—such as
participatory photography, digital storytelling, theatre, and visual
arts—to document and analyze migration experiences in innovative and
ethically sound ways.
•Ethical Representation of Migrants. Strategies for countering
dehumanizing or reductive portrayals of migrants in research, media,
and public discourse.
•Arts as Advocacy and Social Change
•Exploring how creative projects can raise public awareness, influence
policy, and promote social justice for migrant communities.
