The Department has shown long-standing leadership among Canadian
Linguistics Departments in experimental language sciences. The
Department offers cutting-edge training in experimental research
methods including advanced statistical analysis and, since 2014, has
organized the Spring Training in Experimental Psycholinguistics
(STEP). Current areas of specialization include:

- Psycholinguistics (Archer, Colston, Huang, Järvikivi)
- Laboratory phonology and phonetics (Archer, Arnhold, Huang)
- Bilingual, first, second and heritage language acquisition (Archer,
Colston, Daskalaki, Järvikivi, Paradis)
- Bilingualism and communication disorders (Paradis)

Students and faculty collaboratively use the following facilities:
- Centre for Comparative Psycholinguistics (CCP), equipped for
eye-tracking, EEG and behavioural research
- Bilingual Acquisition Lab of Alberta (BALA) and Heritage Language
Lab (HeritLab), using portable equipment and materials to conduct
research at schools and children's homes
- Little Magpies Lab, equipped for studying infant language
acquisition
- Alberta Phonetics Lab (APhL) and Prosody lab, providing four sound
booths with stationary and portable recording equipment
