Research Centre 1252 "Prominence in Language", University of Cologne,
Germany

The Collaborative Research Centre "Prominence in Language“ (CRC 1252)
is a dynamic research environment with 20 research projects in
linguistics and related fields. Our vision is to investigate
prominence relations in larger discourse segments and dialogue. More

The CRC 1252 seeks to fill twelve doctoral positions within the

- A01 Intonation and attention orienting: Neurophysiological and
behavioural correlates (Grice/Schumacher)
- A07 Metrical prominence - Scales and structures (Baumann)
- B02 Beyond split case marking: Participant coding strategies in East
African languages (Hellwig/Mitchell)
- B04 Interaction of nominal and verbal features for Differential
Object Marking (García García/Caro Reina)
- B06 Attention and prominence in language production and acquisition
(Penke)
- B08 Differential Object Marking in the Nuristani Languages (Hill)
- B09 Prominence in action: The competition for argument-marking in
German Sign Language (DGS) (Perniss)
- B10 The role of gender in prominence hierarchies: A cross-linguistic
and cross-register perspective (Le Foll/Hinterwimmer)
- C02 Temporality and modalization in discourse structure
(Becker/Egetenmeyer)
- C11 Prominence in Large Language Models (Reiter)

The positions are available from 1 April 2025 on a part-time basis
(25.89 hours per week). The positions are to be filled for a fixed
term until 31 December 2028. If the applicant meets the relevant wage
requirements and personal qualifications, the salary is based on
remuneration group 13 TV-L of the pay scale for the German public
sector.

YOUR TASKS
- conduct research on prominence in language
- develop and apply empirical methodologies in linguistic research
- present and disseminate research results in scientific outlets

YOUR PROFILE
- excellent academic record
- university degree (Master) in linguistics or related fields
- knowledge of relevant experimental and theoretical methods
- research experience relevant for the thesis project
- ability to work collaboratively and adapt quickly to new research
topics
- high proficiency in English
- strong motivation and commitment
- good communication skills and team-oriented mindset
