Description:
At the Department of Psycholinguistics and Didactics of German,
Faculty of Modern Languages, at Goethe University Frankfurt the
position of a Research associate (m/f/d) (E 13 TV-G-U, 65% part time)
is to be filled on 01 April 2024 within the project “Negation beyond
language: Interactions between verbal and non-verbal negation” (PIs:
Dr. Merle Weicker, Goethe University Frankfurt; Dr. Carolin Dudschig,
University of Tübingen). The project is part of the CRC 1629 “Negation
in Language and Beyond (NegLaB)”. The position will be non-permanent
until 31 December 2027. The salary grade is based on the job
characteristics of the collective agreement (TV-G-U) applicable to
Goethe University.
Responsibilities:
The project explores negation as a multimodal phenomenon, i.e., in
speech and in speech-accompanying bodily expressions such as gestures
and facial expressions. Taking a psycholinguistic and
cognitive-oriented processing perspective, the project addresses
comprehension and production aspects of nonverbal negation in both
German-speaking adults and children. The successful candidate is
expected to work collaboratively in the project and to actively
participate in the courses, workshops, and events offered by the CRC.
We are looking for a highly qualified candidate, who will design,
implement, and analyse language-acquisition experiments for
German-speaking children and contribute to the dissemination of the
experimental results. The opportunity for academic qualification (PhD)
and independent research will be provided.
We offer the possibility to contribute to an innovative
interdisciplinary field of research, a stimulating and international
collaborative environment, training in experiment design and data
analysis, funds for networking, conference participations, and
individual career development
Requirements:
Applicants should hold a very good MA in linguistics (or equivalent),
with the degree completed by 31 March 2024 the latest. They should
demonstrate interest and high motivation for empirical language
acquisition research and gesture research. Very good language skills
in German and English are required. Proficiency with common software
(e.g., LaTeX, Microsoft Office) is expected. Knowledge of data
collection using psycholinguistic methods and software (e.g. Psychopy)
as well as of quantitative data analysis (e.g. R) is an advantage.
The Goethe University is committed to a policy of providing equal
employment opportunities for both men and women alike, and therefore
encourages particularly women to apply for the position/s offered.
Individuals with severe disability will be prioritized in case of
equal aptitiude and ability.
Please submit your application with the usual documents (cover letter,
curriculum vitae, and relevant certificates in original and, if
necessary, certified translations into German or English) and your MA
thesis electronically in one single PDF document by 13 February 2024
to Dr. Merle Weicker, email: weicker at em.uni-frankfurt.de.

Information about the CRC “NegLaB”:
The ability to express negation is one of the fundamental and
universal characteristics of human language. Linguistic and
non-linguistic cognitive processes are involved in the acquisition and
processing of negation, the relationship between which is still poorly
understood. Researchers from the fields of linguistics and psychology
are working in the Collaborative Research Center "NegLaB" on open
questions about the function of negation in language (spokesperson:
Prof. Dr. Cecilia Poletto). The aim is to develop a theoretical
perspective on how negation manifests itself in natural languages, how
it is acquired and processed and why its concrete expression differs
so much between languages. In this way, the network aims to contribute
to a better understanding of the connections between linguistic
competence and general cognition. For the first funding period, the
CRC NegLaB receives total funding of around 9.3 million Euros.
