Meeting Description:

The 5th NINJAL-UHM Linguistics Workshop will be held between April 27
and 28, 2024, at University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa (UHM). The workshop is
co-organized by the National Institute for Japanese Language and
Linguistics (NINJAL) and the Department of Linguistics at UHM. This is
a continuation of a long-standing relationship between NINJAL and UHM:
our first joint workshop was held in 2017 before a memorandum of
understanding for cooperation and exchange (MoU) was established
between the two institutions in 2018. Since then the workshop was held
twice in 2019, and the most recent workshop was held last year to
celebrate the renewal of the MoU. This year, the workshop will feature
two special sessions, general sessions, and poster sessions.

Call for Papers:

The NINJAL-UHM Linguistics Workshop 2024

Special Session 1 [Rethinking and reimagining roles of linguists in
communities]: We solicit papers on any aspect of roles that linguists
should/can play in communities that they work with, including but not
limited to, existing issues in current practices, different approaches
linguists have taken in their interaction with communities, and
proposals that explore novel ways of getting involved with
communities.

Plenary Speakers:
Masahiro Yamada (NINJAL)
Kohei Nakazawa (Shinshu University)

Special Session 2 [Microvariation within linguistic families]: We
solicit papers that explore microvariations within a single language
family or closely related language families, and how they can inform
us about linguistic phenomena where microvariations are observed and
the nature of linguistic variation.

Plenary Speakers:
Michinori Shimoji (Kyushu University)
Yuto Niinaga (Hirosaki University)

General and Poster Sessions: Studies that focus on any aspects of
languages in Asia Pacific are welcome, but studies that focus on
lesser-studied languages are especially encouraged.

Abstract submission: We welcome abstract submissions for 20-minute
oral presentations for the special and general sessions, and for
poster presentations. An abstract must be written in English and
should be limited to 400 words, excluding examples and references, and
should specify the intended session(s). Submit your abstract(s) as PDF
to langconf at hawaii.edu as email attachments, with “NINJAL-UHM
workshop” as the subject line.

Notification of acceptance: March 23 (Friday) HST
