Subject: English; Historical Linguistics, Pragmatics, Semantics, Syntax: Assistant/Associate Professor in English Language and Linguistics, Aarhus University

University or Organization: Aarhus University
Department: English
Job Location: Aarhus, Denmark
Web Address: https://international.au.dk/about/profile/vacant-position
s/job/tenure-track-assistant-professor-or-tenured-associate-professor-
in-english-language-and-linguistics
Job Title: Assistant/Associate Professor in English Language and
Linguistics
Job Rank: Assistant Professor, Associate Professor

Specialty Areas: Historical Linguistics; Pragmatics; Semantics; Syntax

Required Language(s): English (eng)

Description:

We are looking for a dedicated colleague with research and teaching
experience in English syntax, semantics and pragmatics and in the
history of the English language, who is qualified to teach the two
obligatory courses English Language in Use: Practice and Theory (BA,
International Business Communication in English) and English
Linguistics 2 (BA, English), in particular the component History of
English, and who will strengthen the research and teaching profiles of
the department nationally and internationally.

The applicant should have research and/or teaching experience and
qualifications relevant for the teaching of other obligatory language
and linguistics courses on the BA and MA degree programmes in English
and on the BA and MA degree programmes in International Business
Communication in English and for the teaching of more specialised
elective courses on the same four degree programmes. Therefore, in
addition to English syntax, semantics and pragmatics and to the
history of the English language, research and/or teaching experience
in neighbouring subdisciplines will also be relevant, for example
contrastive/comparative linguistics, conversation analysis, corpus
linguistics, discourse analysis, first and second language
acquisition, morphology, multimodality in texts, phonetics and
phonology, and/or psycho- and neurolinguistics.

In sum, we are looking for an innovative and dedicated applicant who
will enhance the research and teaching profiles of the department
nationally and internationally as well as contributing to Aarhus
University’s core activities in research, teaching and supervision,
talent development and knowledge exchange.

Applicants must state the position (tenure-track assistant professor
or tenured associate professor) for which they are applying.
Applications in which this is not specified will not be considered.

The tenure-track assistant professorship begins with a full-time,
fixed-term, five-year appointment as an assistant professor with a
view to permanent employment as a tenured associate professor. See
‘Tenure review and the tenure-track assistant professorship’ below for
information about attaining tenure.

The associate professorship is full-time and tenured.

The appointment begins on 1 January 2025 or as soon as possible
thereafter. The School of Communication and Culture is committed to
diversity and encourages all qualified applicants to apply regardless
of their personal background.

The position includes giving lectures in the two obligatory courses
mentioned above, being the course coordinator for both courses and
teaching at least one seminar group in each course. Responsibilities
may also include teaching interdisciplinary courses for students at
the Department of English and possibly for other students at the
School of Communication and Culture.

The successful applicant will be expected to teach and supervise on
the English department’s BA, MA and PhD programmes, with the
possibility of cross-departmental collaboration, and to apply
innovative teaching methods and contribute to the ongoing development
of degree programmes and curricula. In this connection, experience of
degree programme and curriculum development at universities or similar
institutions will be an advantage.

All teaching at the Department of English is in English; therefore,
applicants must have native or near-native command of English.
