*Description*
The Master's degree program "Linguistics: Language, Communication and
Cognition" is offered jointly by the linguistic subjects of the
Faculty of Philology and the Center for Cognitive Science of the
Institute of Psychology. The program aims to explore language in its
forms and functions, in its variability, in its history and
development, in its cognitive prerequisites and conditions as well as
in its communicative performance. It offers students the possibility
of individual specialization in one of the following six fields:
- English Language & Linguistics
- General Linguistics & Linguistic Diversity
- German Linguistics
- Romance Linguistics
- Slavic Linguistics
- Language & Cognition
*Languages of instruction*
The two specializations of "English Language & Linguistics" and
"General Linguistics & Linguistic Diversity" are taught exclusively in
English. The other specializations include courses taught in German.
*Entry profile*
Prospective students are expected to have a Bachelor’s degree (or a
similar qualification) in any linguistic or philological discipline.
They need to have completed at least 35 ECTS in linguistic subjects.
This includes:
- sound knowledge of the structure of one or more languages, proven
through classes in, for example, phonetics, phonology, morphology,
syntax, semantics, etc.
- sound knowledge in at least one of these linguistic areas:
linguistic action such as pragmatics, text linguistics, conversation
analysis, linguistic variation and/or language change such as
dialectology, sociolinguistics, historical linguistics
- language and cognition such as cognitive linguistics,
psycholinguistics, neurolinguistics
*Career paths*
The Master's program qualifies students for university careers and
further qualifications in linguistics and cognitive sciences as well
as in related disciplines such as philologies, communication and media
sciences. It also qualifies students for non-university occupational
fields that focus on language, cognition, communication and media.
This includes, for example, areas of Natural Language Processing (e.g.
search engine optimization, development of speech recognition
software, etc.). Other related occupational fields include media and
publishing as well as journalism. In addition, jobs in public
relations, science management, foundations, international funding and
development organizations or in the cultural sector are typical career
goals for linguists. The intensive study of language and communication
in their social and cultural context as well as the acquisition of
competences in the area of data processing, organization and
presentation prepare students in many ways for these and other
professional fields.
