Job Title: Post Doc - Akademische Rätin / Akademischer Rat auf Zeit
(A13)
Job Rank: Post Doc

Specialty Areas: Cognitive Science; Historical Linguistics; Linguistic
Theories; Syntax; Text/Corpus Linguistics

Required Language(s): English (eng)

Description:

The English Department at the Friedrich-Alexander Universität
Erlangen-Nürnberg, Germany (FAU) is filling a non-tenured, full-time,
post-doc position in English Linguistics (A13 Akademische Rätin auf
Zeit, m/f/d) for 3 years (with the possibility to extend the contract
for 3 more years). Starting 01 October 2024, the candidate will be
working in the team of the newly appointed Chair of English
Linguistics (Lotte Sommerer).

The candidate should have a strong background in Usage-based Cognitive
Construction Grammar (CCxG) and Corpus Linguistics. Ideally, the
applicant also has a background in diachronic research (DCxG) and
philological expertise in earlier stages of English (Old English,
Middle English). However, this is not a must. Any
cognitive-functionalist specialization in CxG – investigating
morphology, syntax, phraseology, semantics, or discourse-pragmatic/
socio-variationist aspects – is welcome. The candidate should have a
convincing publication record for his/her age, advanced R skills and a
firm understanding of quantitative methods (e.g. collostructional
analyses, regression models).

Duties:
The appointed candidate has to
 • teach 5 hours a week/per term in the BA, MA and BEd programs
(roughly 2-3 courses)
 • help with some departmental, administrative duties
 • contribute to and participate in FAU’s Research Training Group
Dimensions of Constructional Space (DFG RTG 2839) by research and
supervision

Necessary qualifications:
The candidate
 • holds a PhD in (English) linguistics
 • works in Construction Grammar
 • has two or more years post-doc experience
 • conducts corpus-based, quantitative research (using inferential
statistics)

The future job-holder can expect a vibrant and intellectually
stimulating research community, a highly-motivated team and excellent
working conditions for completing a Habilitation/Higher Doctorate (if
desired), as well as interdisciplinary and international research and
networking.

The FAU is committed to increasing the number of women in senior and
in academic positions among the academic and general university staff
and therefore expressly encourages qualified women to apply.

Please send your application (CV, List of Publications & Talks,
Research- and Teaching Statement of max. 5 pages) as a single.pdf file
to lotte.sommerer at fau.de. The deadline for applications is the 26 July
2024.
