Subject: MA in Linguistics (Queen Mary University of London)
On our flexible MA in Linguistics programme, you will study in the
UK's top department for linguistic research. You can select a pathway
that suits your research and career plans. Our Linguistics MA also has
a Research Practicum option, where you can undertake a research
placement with one of our staff or external partners. Students on our
MA benefit from a small cohort, and full inclusion in our research
environment.
Students can choose from one of the following four pathways:
-Conversion
-General
-Specialisation in Sociolinguistics
-Specialisation in Formal Linguistics
Each pathway combines a set of required core courses with a diverse
set of optional courses including Coding for Linguistics, Directed
Study on a Special Topic, Advanced Syntax (Morpheme to Meaning),
Beyond Language, Language Disorders, Field Methods (Unfamiliar
Languages) and many more. Students also participate in bi-weekly
reading groups on Sociolinguistics, Formal Linguistics and/or
Experimental Linguistics depending on interest, and get training and
support to make use of our suite of Experimental Linguistics Labs.
All students conduct original research and write a dissertation. Many
of these dissertation projects have led to conference presentations,
PhD projects, and publications.
Location: Queen Mary University of London
Language of Instruction: English
Starting date: September 15th 2024
Application deadline: August 1st (Non-UK applicants), September 1 (UK
applicants)
Duration: 1 year (Full Time), 2 years (Part Time)
*Entry profile*
Prospective students are expected to have a Bachelor’s degree (or a
similar qualification). The Conversion pathway is appropriate for
applicants without a previous degree in Linguistics, while the
General, Sociolinguistics and Formal Linguistics pathways are most
appropriate for applicants with a previous degree, or other comparable
training in Linguistics. Contact the MA convenor to discuss if you are
unsure which option is best for you.
*Career paths*
Our MA in Linguistics is excellent preparation for further
postgraduate study in Linguistics and related fields. Many of our
alumni have continued on to pursue fully funded PhDs at QMUL, while
others have gone on to funded places at top universities around the
world. We offer support with PhD funding applications to MA students.
Beyond academia, our MA in Linguistics equips students with an
unusually wide range of skills, including:
• Using logic and evidence to build arguments
• Fieldwork skills and gathering data from a range of people
• Ability to see patterns in complicated situations
• Confidence in learning new systems, including software and
basic statistics
• Sensitivity to diverse cultures, communities, and human
behaviour
• Understanding of texts, genres, and spoken communication
We train students to recognise and utlise this wide-ranging toolkit of
skills when they apply for jobs, whatever their chosen career path may
be. Linguistics is closely tied to subjects such as psychology,
sociology, philosophy, anthropology and cultural studies. Our alumni
are pursuing successful careers in data science, marketing, science
communication, public policy, diversity and inclusion, financial
services, and journalism.
