- non-IE languages
Job Rank: Post Doc
Specialty Areas: General Linguistics; Historical Linguistics; Typology
Description:
Applications are invited for a full 3-year Postdoc position in the
research project “E Pluribus Unum - Emergent, Convergent Paradigms”
(German Research Foundation), led by PIs Uta Reinöhl, Laura Becker and
Lotte Sommerer. The postdoctoral researcher will be employed at the
University of Freiburg, Germany.
*Project description*:
The postdoctoral researcher will participate in research into
convergent paradigmatization from a typological perspective.
Convergent paradigms consist of grammatical forms (“grams”) deriving
from heterogeneous original word classes, which over time developed
(more) paradigmatic relations to each other. In other words, the grams
in question are known to derive from a variety of source categories
and they are also known to have distributionally converged in some
way. One of many examples comes from Indo-Aryan postpositions, which
are known to have derived from nouns, adverbs and participles (Reinöhl
2016). Convergent paradigmatization bears a unique potential to
elucidate interactions between forces in grammatical change including,
but not restricted to, source determination and analogical change. We
will, in this project, investigate the convergent paradigmatization of
selected grammatical categories in several families, including in
Tibeto-Burman, Indo-Aryan, Mayan and Oceanic.
*Your profile*:
The ideal candidate has a background in grammaticalization and
typology. Expertise in languages outside of the Indo-European family
is welcome, including through fieldwork and/or corpus-linguistic work.
*Place and duration*:
The position is a 3-year, 100% Postdoc position (TV-L13) at the
University of Freiburg (Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany).
*Starting date*: ideally November 1, 2024, as soon as possible
*Requirements*: Completed PhD.
