Job Title: Assistant Professor of Cognitive Science (tenure track)
Job Rank: Assistant Professor

Specialty Areas: Cognitive Science

Description:

Carleton College invites applications for the position of Assistant
Professor of Cognitive Science (tenure track) beginning September 1,
2025. Review of applications will begin October 1, 2024, and continue
until the position is filled. Members of groups traditionally
underrepresented in cognitive science are
strongly encouraged to apply.

Qualifications
 - A Ph.D. in hand by August 31, 2025, in one of the core disciplines
of cognitive science (psychology, philosophy, linguistics, computer
science) is strongly preferred. We will also consider candidates with
cognitive science research background and a Ph.D. in a related field.
 - A strong interest in teaching undergraduates in a liberal arts
environment.

Teaching Load and Responsibilities
 - Teach the equivalent of five courses per year, over three
trimesters (four courses the first year) including two sections of our
introduction to cognitive science course, a mid-level course in some
aspect of cognitive science and an advanced seminar in the candidate’s
area of interest. Candidates may also elect to teach in the college’s
first-year seminar program, or to develop interdisciplinary courses.
 - Work with students on their senior projects (comps)
 - Involve students in your research (if and as appropriate)
 - Serve as an academic advisor and on college committees (after your
first year)
 - Help cultivate a welcoming community. We strive to foster an
environment where all people can be themselves, build community,
learn, and grow.

To apply, submit online:
 - Cover letter - describing why this position is of interest to you.
 - Teaching statement - (2-3 pages) describing your approach to
teaching, discussing ideas or techniques you would like to pursue or
have tried in prior teaching experiences, including experiences as a
TA and/or tutoring. Address how these will engage a diverse student
body in terms of their preparation, career interests, identities, and
the intersections between them.
 - Research statement - (2-3 pages) describing your research interests
for an audience of non-specialists. Provide examples demonstrating
whether undergraduates could participate in your research projects and
if so, how.
 - CV
 - Sample syllabus of a CGSC course you would propose to teach (this
can be at any level, but do specify whether this is intended as an
introductory, mid-level, or advanced seminar course)

After passing through an initial screening process, applicants may
receive a request for the contact information for three references who
can speak to your abilities in teaching, research, and collaborative
engagement. Letters of recommendation may be requested as soon as
October 21 for potential finalists. We intend to conduct the first
round of interviews over Zoom, and then invite 3 or 4 finalists to
campus in November.
