From: Hedde Zeijlstra [hzeijls at uni-goettingen.de]
Subject: Pragmatics, Semantics, Syntax: Research Assistant (Postdoc position), Georg August Universität Göttingen

University or Organization: Georg August Universität Göttingen
Department: Seminar for English Linguistics
Job Location: Göttingen, Germany
Job Title: Research Assistant (Postdoc position)
Job Rank: Post Doc

Specialty Areas: Pragmatics; Semantics; Syntax

Description:

The Department of English Philology at the Georg-August University
Göttingen is offering

Research Assistant (Postdoc position) (f/m/d)

with 100 % of the regular weekly working hours (currently 39.8
hours/week) for a limited period of 5 years starting at the 1st of
October 2024. Remuneration is according to the German public salary
scale TV-L 13.

Your tasks:
Your task is out to carry out research within the ERC Advanced Grant
‘Unpacking Paradigmatic Gaps (UNPAG)’ recently awarded to Prof. Hedde
Zeijlstra. This project aims at understanding why certain logically
accessible concepts (like ‘not all’) appear never to be lexicalized
across languages. The research will focus primarily on the semantics
(and to a lesser extent the syntax and/or pragmatics) of negation,
polarity-sensitivity and locality. A small part of the job will also
involve the scientific coordination of the project. More information
about UNPAG will appear on heddezeijlstra.org.

Your profile:
Prerequisites are a completed academic university education (PhD) in
linguistics or in a related subject, as well as a research focus on
semantics (or a neighboring field if one has ample knowledge of formal
semantics). Candidates should have a clear interest in working on the
topic of Prof. Zeijlstra’s ERC grant. Applicants who have not yet
received their PhD degree at the time of submission should submit a
declaration by the supervisor(s) that the degree will be obtained
before starting the Postdoc position.

Application process:
Applications should be submitted by 15.08.2024 the latest in a pdf
file with the name "Postdoc Unpag + surname of applicant", to the
email listed below. The pdf file should contain the following
information:
 - A letter of motivation, in which they elaborate their ambitions,
scientific interests and how they consider fitting in the ERC Project
UNPAG;
 - An academic CV;
 - Scans of the documents indicating academic degrees (or the
supervisor declaration);
 - A copy of the PhD thesis (or a representative chapter of the thesis
or a paper);
 - The contact details of three academic referees.

The University of Göttingen is an equal opportunities employer and
places particular emphasis on fostering career opportunities for
women. Qualified women are therefore strongly encouraged to apply in
fields in which they are underrepresented. The University has
committed itself to being a family-friendly institution and supports
their employees in balancing work and family life. The mission of the

Applications from severely disabled persons with equivalent
qualifications will be given preference.
