Meeting Description:

Founded in 1999, IGALA is the premiere international scholarly
organization committed to the promotion and support of research on
language, gender, and sexuality. The theme of IGALA 13 (2025) is: Re-
thinking (g)local genders, sexualities, and activisms. We aim to
foster a critical examination of the current political, ideological,
social, and cultural tensions between local, regional, and global
understandings of genders and sexualities -and their intersection with
other social categories such as race, social class, age, etc.

Our goal is to showcase research on language, gender, and sexuality
from a diverse range of cultural, linguistic, and geographical
contexts, in particular work that engages with issues of
individual/collective/institutional power dynamics and agency in the
situated representation, construction, and negotiation of gender and
sexuality and their connection to language and, more broadly,
semiosis. We also wish to encourage theoretical, empirical, and
methodological discussions on the past, present, and future of the
field.

Confirmed keynote speakers:
Dr. Deborah Cameron (Oxford University, UK)
Dr. Lexi Webster (University of Southampton, UK)
Dr. Glenda Melo (Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, Brazil)
