Overview
The English Language and Literature Department (ELL) at the National
Institute of Education (NIE), Nanyang Technological University,
Singapore, invites qualified applicants to apply for the Assistant
Professor / Associate Professor position in the area of English
Language and Literacy Education (Primary level /Young learners), with
a preference for candidates with research and teaching experience in
multilingual settings. As one of the most highly ranked education
institutions in the world, NIE is at the forefront of education
research. As an academic department within an institution devoted to
teacher education, ELL is dedicated to innovative teaching and
high-quality research in the areas of English language and
linguistics, literature, and English teacher education. We have a
strong and diverse team of highly dedicated faculty members engaged in
cutting-edge disciplinary, interdisciplinary, and education research
who are committed to bringing theoretically robust and practice
relevant perspectives to classrooms. Our mission is to develop
critically engaged, socially responsible, knowledgeable, and
passionate individuals and English teachers for the 21st century.
Requirements
Applicants should minimally satisfy the following criteria:
• a PhD or EdD qualification in the area of English Language and
Literacy education from a university of good international standing
(applicants who are nearing completion of their doctoral studies will
be considered but PhD/EdD must be in hand for the appointment);
• an established track record of academic research, presentations,
relevant publications in reputable peer-reviewed international
journals in the area of English Language and Literacy at the primary
level/for young learners and preferably within multilingual settings;
• an established record of excellent teaching and supervision in
relevant areas at undergraduate or graduate levels (preferably both);
and
• demonstrate academic leadership and service in their university and
department, and in the profession.
Additional requirements for Associate Professor:
• Excellent track record as an Assistant/Associate Professor in
reputable universities;
• An excellent record in securing and managing competitive grants,
producing impactful research results, and engaging in innovative,
collaborative research pursuits; and
• Good international network of scholarly collaborators.
The following are preferred qualifications/experiences for the
position:
1. Experience as an English language/literacy teacher in K-12
settings; and
2. Experience as teacher or teacher educator in multilingual
settings.
Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be expected to:
• contribute to teaching and course development at the undergraduate
and graduate levels, as well as related activities such as supervision
of teaching practice, and thesis supervision and examination;
• develop a robust research agenda and maintain a strong publication
record;
• undertake administrative and/or leadership roles and to contribute
to other service-related activities at the department or institution
level;
• establish partnerships with local and international researchers and
practitioners to explore avenues for research and teaching that will
create an impact in the discipline and/or educational practice; and
• (For Associate Professor level) mentor junior faculty members and
serve in NIE / NTU committees, and offer professional services to
schools, to the Singapore Ministry of Education, and to other public
education-related organizations if requested.
