Professor
Job Rank: Rank Open
Specialty Areas: Cognitive Science; Computational Linguistics;

Description:
National Institute for Japanese Language and Linguistics (NINJAL)
seeks applicants in the areas of statistical modeling and linguistics,
the latter broadly construed to encompass speech science, cognitive
science, corpus linguistics and theoretical linguistics. The starting
date for this job is October 2024, or as soon as possible thereafter.
This is an open-rank search. The salary will be determined based on
the qualifications and the previous career of the candidate, but will
be in the range of 3,000,000 - 7,000,000 yen annually (base salary
only; other allowances are available). We welcome applicants who have
strong research records in more than one of the above areas and who
are committed to conducting large-scale collaborative research in an
emerging trend of linguistic research utilizing statistical modeling
methods. Native or near-native proficiency in Japanese is highly
desirable.
For details of this employment and instructions for application, see
https://www.ninjal.ac.jp/english/info/jobs/
Background: NINJAL's mission is to lead cutting-edge research on the
Japanese language/linguistics and in related fields. For details, see
https://www.ninjal.ac.jp/info/aboutus/mission/. We are planning to
launch a research center on statistical modeling, tentatively called
the `E3P-Linguistics Center' (E3P = Electronic, Experimental,
Evidence-based, and Predictive). The Center will leverage large-scale
electronic data and analytical methodologies grounded in empirical
evidence (including experimental research methods) to pioneer
next-generation linguistic research. The candidate is expected to lead
collaborative interdisciplinary research by coordinating with current
academic staff at the Center and other sections of NINJAL. NINJAL
actively promotes the recruitment of young researchers and is also
committed to diversity and equity.
