Subject: Funding campaign for Amahuaca school

The Linguistics Department of the University at Buffalo wishes to draw
the broader community's attention to a funding campaign for the
construction of an elementary school in the Amahuaca village (Upper
Inuya River, Atalaya, in the Peruvian Amazon). The village is the home
of a community of families who have recently established contact with
the broader national society. For more details see below or contact
Candy Angulo Pando (candyang at buffalo.edu), PhD student in our
department.

--------
Amahuaca, an endangered language spoken in Peru's Amazonian region,
faces a unique sociolinguistic challenge. Two distinct groups of
speakers exist: one, older individuals in urban areas near the Inuya,
Sepahua, and Breu rivers, who haven't passed on the language to their
children, leading to its endangerment; and the other, residents of
Alto Esperanza, an indigenous reserve area along the Upper Inuya
River, where the language persists among a small population,
especially the younger generation.

Recently making contact with wider Peruvian society, the community of
Alto Esperanza seeks to provide its youth with essential education.
However, their journey is impeded by the lack of proper educational
infrastructure. The Peruvian Intercultural Bilingual Education system,
focused on Hispanicization, doesn't serve their needs, and the
community lacks even basic services like medical posts and utilities.
You can find more information about the group in initial contact at
https://www.upperamazon.org/news/4cf1gqor65avpz99urou82dp0hud0f, and
learn about the Amahuaca people and their first encounter among
speakers from different communities here:

Given the endangered status of the Amahuaca language, the mission is
to establish a much-needed elementary school in Alto Esperanza. This
school isn't just about education; it's a beacon for cultural
preservation and community growth, where the rich heritage and
language of the Amahuaca people can flourish and be passed on. Your
generous donation is crucial in realizing this vision. With your
support, we can directly contribute to building a school that promises
to transform lives and shape futures. Each dollar brings us closer to
ensuring that the children of the Amahuaca community have access to
quality education and the tools they need to succeed.

By investing in education, we empower the Amahuaca people and create
opportunities that will positively impact generations to come.
Together, let's forge a legacy of education, empowerment, and hope for
the Peruvian Amahuaca community.

Join us in this endeavor and be a part of something truly impactful.
Your donation today will create a ripple effect of positive change,
touching countless lives.

Thank you for considering our cause and for your dedication to making
a difference in the world.
