Meeting Description:

The Department of Linguistics at the University of Washington is
pleased to host the 4th Sound Systems of Latin America (SSLA 4) on
November 8-9, 2024.

SSLA 4 brings together leading scholars in the study of the sound
systems of the indigenous languages of Latin America. Latin American
indigenous languages are both linguistically diverse and severely
endangered and under-studied. SSLA 4 promotes the scholarly
interaction and collaboration between indigenous and non-indigenous
researchers. The conference’s topics will therefore encompass both the
synchrony and diachrony of the phonetics and phonologies of particular
dialects, languages, and families, and the contributions of these
languages to phonetic and phonological typology, along with the
documentation of languages whose phonologies remain undescribed or
under-described. Many (or all) of the scholarly talks presented at the
conference will discuss direct collaborations with indigenous
communities for language documentation, thus promoting indigenous
points of views in the development of the best practices within our
field for carrying out this research.

El departamento de Lingüística de la Universidad de Washington se
complace en ser anfitrión de la cuarta conferencia sobre Sistemas de
Sonido de Latinoamérica (SSLA 4) del 8 al 9 de noviembre del 2024.
SSLA 4 reúne investigadores destacados en el estudio de los sistemas
de sonidos de las lenguas indígenas de Latinoamérica. Aunque éstas son
lingüísticamente diversas, se encuentran amenazadas y son poco
estudiadas. SSLA 4 promueve la interacción y la colaboración entre
investigadores indígenas y no indígenas. Los temas de la conferencia
incluyen: (i) la sincronía y la diacronía fonética y fonológica de las
variantes lingüísticas, las lenguas, y las familias lingüísticas; (ii)
las contribuciones de estas lenguas a la tipología fonética y
fonológica; (iii) la documentación de lenguas cuyos sistemas de
sonidos siguen siendo poco o nada descritos. La gran mayoría de las
ponencias abordarán colaboraciones con comunidades indígenas para la
documentación de lenguas, promoviendo las perspectivas indígenas en el
desarrollo de mejores prácticas para la realización de estas
investigaciones.

Call for Papers:

In addition to plenaries and contributed talks and posters, we will
host thematic workshops on the study of indigenous languages of Latin
America.

We invite paper submissions addressing any aspects of the behavior of
sounds in the indigenous languages of Latin America (Mexico, Central
America, and South America). A one-page abstract in the form of a PDF
file should be sent to ssla4 at uw.edu no later than 11:59 PM, July 15,
2024 (AoE time zone, UTC -12). A second page may be added with data
and references. Both pages should have at least 2.5 cm margins on all
sides, and all text other than references should be in 11 point font
or larger. The author’s/authors’ name/names should not appear on the
abstract. No format other than PDF will be accepted. Abstracts may be
in English, Spanish, or Portuguese, the languages of the conference.
All abstracts will be reviewed by a scientific committee, and
decisions about acceptance will be sent to authors by August 1, 2024.

We also invite proposals for workshops on various topics, including
(but not limited to) collaborations between indigenous and
non-indigenous scholars, and demonstrations of relevant tools for
documenting or studying the sound systems of Latin American indigenous
languages. These should be formatted as outlined above.

Funds from the UW’s Center for American Indian & Indigenous Studies
are available to support travel to the conference by indigenous
scholars presenting work at the conference. Please include in the body
of the email submitting your abstract whether you would like to be
considered for these funds. The application form will be sent along
with the notice of acceptance.

Además de las pláticas magistrales, presentaciones, y la sesión de
pósteres, habrá talleres temáticos sobre las lenguas indígenas de
América Latina.

Invitamos propuestas de presentaciones y pósteres sobre cualquier
aspecto del comportamiento de los sonidos en las lenguas indígenas
Latinoamericanas (México, Centroamérica, y Sudamérica). El resumen
debe tener una extensión máxima de una cuartilla, mandado en formato
PDF a ssla4 at uw.edu a más tardar el 15 de julio del 2024 a las 11:59
PM, sin importar su ubicación (UTC -12). Se puede añadir una segunda
cuartilla con datos y referencias. Ambas páginas deberán tener
márgenes de, por lo menos, 2.5 cm en ambos lados, y el tamaño de la
fuente para todo el texto, excluyendo las referencias, deberá ser de
11 puntos o más. El nombre del autor/autores no debe aparecer en el
resumen. No se aceptarán formatos que no sean PDF. Los resúmenes
pueden ser en inglés, español o portugués, las lenguas de la
conferencia. Todos los resúmenes serán revisados por un comité
científico, y su decisión será comunicada a los autores el 1ro de
agosto del 2024.

Invitamos también propuestas de talleres sobre varios temas,
incluyendo (pero no limitado a) colaboraciones entre investigadores
indígenas y no indígenas, y demostraciones de herramientas utilizadas
en la documentación e investigación de los sistemas de sonidos de
lenguas indígenas de Latinoamérica. Estas propuestas deberán tener un

de la UW que están disponibles para apoyar a investigadores indígenas
