Job Posting Details
The Division of Humanities of the Hong Kong University of Science and
Technology (HKUST) invites applications for a tenure-track position in
Applied Linguistics with an expected start date of July 2, 2025.  The
position is at the rank of Assistant Professor; exceptional candidates
at the Associate or Full Professor level will also be considered.

We particularly encourage applicants whose approach draws upon
sociolinguistics, linguistic ethnography, and/or linguistic
anthropology. Expertise in language education or an associated area of
applied linguistics would be an advantage.

The appointee will be expected to publish strongly, write grant
proposals, supervise graduate students and/or post-doctoral fellows,
organize workshops and seminars, and develop internal, local and
international collaborations. They will teach undergraduate and/or
postgraduate courses in Humanities for general education and/or the
master’s program in International Language Education.

Applicants should have a PhD degree in applied linguistics,
sociolinguistics or an associated discipline. The successful candidate
will demonstrate a commitment to excellence in research and teaching,
and will have a strong publication record appropriate to career stage.
They will have a developing trajectory as Principal or Co-Investigator
on funded projects.

In addition to a research postgraduate program at both master’s and
doctoral level in the broad area of Humanities, the Division of
Humanities provides general education courses for all undergraduates
at HKUST. The School of Humanities and Social Science offers a
postgraduate master’s program, MA in International Language Education.

Starting salary will be competitive and commensurate with
qualifications and experience. Fringe benefits including annual leave
and medical/dental benefits will be provided. Housing benefits will
also be provided where applicable.  Initial appointment will normally
be on a three-year contract, renewable subject to mutual agreement.  A
gratuity will be payable upon completion of contract.
