Hispanic and Lusophone linguistics hosted in the US. The conference,
organized entirely by graduate students in the Department of Spanish
and Portuguese at The Ohio State University, aims to bring together a
wide variety of scholars working within distinct disciplines and on
many different aspects of Spanish, Portuguese, Quechua, or any other
indigenous language.
Call for Papers:
We are excited to announce that the call for papers for OSUCHiLL 2025
is open! The event will take place March 21-22, 2025. This year, we
are delighted to announce three keynote speakers for the first time:
Dr. Ana Maria Carvalho (The University of Arizona) specializes in
Portuguese and Spanish linguistics, particularly exploring language
contact, bilingualism, and sociolinguistics. Her research examines the
interactions between Spanish and Portuguese along the borders of
Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay. At OSUChiLL, she will present her
documentary "Vozes das margens," which portrays Portuguese speakers in
northern Uruguay.
Dr. Mary Beaton (Denison University) is a linguist who graduated from
our department in 2015. She researches the interactions between social
categories and phonetics. Her work focuses mainly on Spanish in the
United States, including Puerto Rico. She is currently studying the
Spanish spoken by Puerto Rican communities in Lorain, Ohio.
Dr. Chad Howe (University of Georgia) is an OSU alumnus from 2006. He
studies language variation and change in Romance Languages, exploring
structural changes in language and contact phenomena between Spanish
and Quechua in South America, he also works in Brazilian Portuguese.
We welcome papers dealing with any aspect of Hispanic or Lusophone
linguistics, including but not limited to: variation,
sociolinguistics, pragmatics, phonetics, phonology, morphology,
historical linguistics, psycholinguistics, semantics, and syntax. We
also welcome papers that discuss creoles or indigenous languages of
Hispanic and Lusophone countries. Talks will be allotted 20 minutes
