This project investigates the linguistic outcomes of language contact
between Quechua and Spanish in Peru and Argentina, with a particular
focus on intonation, and in the case of Quechua, its interaction with
morphology. The project specifically examines the production and
perception of questions in both languages. This interdisciplinary
project uses a combination of (socio-)linguistic and psycholinguistic
methods, including eye-tracking. The goal of the project is to shed
light on the effect of linguistic and social factors on the outcomes
of language contact.
Primary responsibilities:

using a combination of linguistic and psycholinguistic methods under
the supervision of the PI.
- Analyze data from production and perception tasks, including
eye-tracking experiments
- Collaborate with the Principal Investigator (PI), undergraduate
research assistants, and local research assistants in Peru and
Argentina
- Work with the team to disseminate research findings through
peer-reviewed publications and presentations at national and
international conferences
Required qualifications:
- PhD in Cognitive Science, (Hispanic) Linguistics, Neuroscience,
Psycholinguistics, Psychology, or a related field. Applicants must
have met the requirements for the PhD by the time of appointment.
- Background in language contact/bilingualism, phonetics/phonology,
psycholinguistics, or sociolinguistics
- Experience conducting field or lab-based research
- Proficiency in Spanish and English
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively
- Excellent communication and organizational skills
- Willingness to learn new skills or acquire technical and theoretical
knowledge as needed. Training will be provided to help the successful
candidate integrate into the project and develop any expertise
necessary.
Desired qualifications:
- Proficiency in Quechua
- Experience working with bilingual populations and under-studied
languages
- Experience with programming and running eye-tracking experiments, as
well as analyzing eye-tracking and intonation data (training will be
provided if needed)
