Linguistic Field(s): Phonology
Call Deadline: 15-Feb-2025
Meeting Description:
In recent decades, interest in including usage factors in phonetic and
phonological work has increased dramatically, and yet there have been
no conferences devoted exclusively to this topic. Given the wide
variety of research questions and diverse methodologies applied to
understanding the phonological systems of both signed and spoken
languages from a usage-based perspective, it is especially important
to provide a platform for researchers to gather in person and share
their questions and results. The organizers hope to encourage a
community of researchers interested in usage-based approaches to
phonological systems to come together to share ideas, learn from each
other, and continue to advance this important field of study.
Call for Papers:
We are pleased to announce the Conference on Usage-Based Approaches to
Phonology, to be held 12-13 July 2025 and co-located with the 2025 LSA
Summer Institute at University of Oregon in Eugene, Oregon, USA. This
conference aims to bring together researchers exploring how
phonological patterns emerge from usage-based processes.
We invite submissions from diverse perspectives that engage with, but
are not limited to, the following topics:
- The role of frequency and use in shaping phonological structure
- Gradience and variability in phonological representations
- Cognitive representations
- Application of usage-based theories
- Diachronic phonological change driven by language usage
- Computational modeling of usage-based phonology
- L1 or L2 acquisition of phonological patterns through exposure and
experience
- The effect of morphosyntactic constructions on phonetics or
phonology
- Phonological processing in real-time language use
- Experimental and corpus-based studies supporting usage-based
phonology
- Studies of spoken or signed phonology that reference usage,
including variation and sound change
Keynote speaker: Joan Bybee (Professor Emerita, University of New
Mexico)
