Description:
The University of Macau (UM) is an internationalized public
comprehensive university in the Macao Special Administrative Region
(MSAR) located at the west bank of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao
Greater Bay Area (GBA).
The Department of English of the FAH invites applications for the
position of Assoc./Asst. Professor of English Linguistics with
expertise in discourse analysis. Research in discourse analysis should
include demonstrated experience analysing spoken English-language
texts, preferably texts from Asian contexts. Preferred subfield
specialisations include conversation analysis, critical discourse
analysis, ethnography of communication and interactional
sociolinguistics. The successful candidate will develop and teach
discourse analysis courses in the BA and MA programmes in English
Studies and develop a programme of research and publication that will
include supervision of PhD students in Linguistics (English)
programme.
The Department of English is an established and distinguished
multinational, scholarly community. The Department offers an
undergraduate degree in English Studies (focusing simultaneously on
literary studies and linguistics), as well as elective courses in
translation studies. At the graduate level the Department hosts two MA
programmes in (i) English Studies and (ii) Translation and PhD degrees
in either (a) Literary Studies or (b) Linguistics. FAH is home to both
the Centre for Linguistics and the Centre for Studies in Translation,
Interpreting and Cognition. The Department of English actively offers
courses in the Computational Linguistics specialisation of the MSc in
Data Science, a programme offered by the Institute of Collaborative
Innovation.
Qualifications
The successful candidate should hold a PhD in Linguistics or related
areas, teaching experience at the tertiary level (particularly for the
post of Associate Professor), and a record of research appropriate to
the rank of Associate/Assistant Professor. Applicants should be able
to demonstrate competence in teaching, promising potential
publication, a willingness to provide service to the University and
the English Department, and an interest in the English language in
Asian contexts.
The selected candidate is expected to assume duty in August 2025.
Remuneration
A taxable annual remuneration starting from MOP855,400 (approximately
USD105,600) will be commensurate with the successful applicants’
academic qualification and relevant professional experience. The
current local maximum income tax rate is 12% but is effectively around
5% - 7% after various discretionary exemptions. Apart from competitive
