Call for Papers:
Journal of Arabic Sociolinguistics, published by Edinburgh University
Press, print ISSN: 2755-1911, online ISSN: 2755-192X.
Special issue on “Analyzing Contemporary Arab political discourse:
Interdisciplinary approaches.”
Guest Editors: Emad Abdul-Latif and Zeinab Taha
During the first quarter of the 21st century, the Arab world witnessed
radical political transformations that affected millions of people. It
was subjected to foreign military invasions in Iraq and Libya.
Internal instability and conflicts broke out in the Arab Spring
countries, turning into civil wars in Libya, Syria, Yemen, and Sudan.
Other countries suffered political and economic turmoil due to
mismanagement, external hegemony, internal tyranny, etc.
Similar radical transformations occurred in political discourse’s
production, circulation, functions, and influence. For a while, social
media allowed for the democratization of public space. Ordinary
people’s discourses rivalled those of political institutions in their
spread and impact. The power of these new discourses challenged the
prevailing discourses of authority and sometimes overcame them.
Despite the recent increase in restrictions on political communication
in most countries of the Arab world, political discourse still exerts
a significant influence in the Arab context.
Research on contemporary Arab political discourse does not keep pace
with its growing influence. Most studies have focused on the Arab
Spring discourses in specific countries, especially Egypt and Tunisia.
Political discourse in other countries, such as the Arabian Peninsula,
Iraq, Algeria, Morocco, and Jordan, and discourse of the aftermath of
the Arab Spring, received less attention.
To fill this gap, the Journal of Arabic Socio-linguistics dedicates a
special issue to Arab political discourse studies, (edited by Emad
Abdul-latif and Zeinab Taha). We invite researchers from various
disciplines, such as linguistics, political sciences, rhetorics,
communication, sociology, history, and literary studies, to submit
their original research on Arab political discourse in the last
twenty-five years (2000-2025). Articles that develop new linguistic
analytic frameworks and theoretical innovations are highly welcomed.
Both articles deal with large corpora using corpus tools or indulge in
an in-depth analysis of small-scale corpora are desired. Topics of the
issue include (but are not limited to) the following:
1. The characteristics of Arab political discourse in the new
millennium.
2. Methodologies for studying Arab political discourse.
3. New genres of political discourse in the Arab world.
4. The language of disinformation and its new mechanisms in
political discourse.
5. State and non-state actors’ discourse: Shaping interactions
and conflicts.
6. Analyzing the discourse of political actors, non-governmental
institutions, civil society organizations, pressure groups, and other
similar entities.
7. Investigating the relationship between discourse and power in
Arab societies.
8. Examining the cultural dimensions of Western theories
explaining the relationship between discourse and Culture.
9. Studying the contexts of linguistic conflict as spaces of
power, such as the media, political, religious, and educational
contexts.
10. Studying the relationships between language and national,
ethnic, and sectarian identities in the Arab world.
11. Examining the linguistic wars and conflicts in the Arab world.
12. Investigating the intersections of political discourse and
gender in the Arab society (world).
13. Examining the audience’s interaction with political discourses
particularly, in new media.
