Subject: Survey participants needed: Language researchers’ knowledge of U.S. Federal Guidelines for research with human participants
Those who do research with human participants can sometimes find their
interactions with an Institutional Review Board (IRB) to be daunting
or even frustrating. Although there may be many reasons for this, some
of the challenge may stem from uncertainty about what types of
research require IRB review and approval. To address this issue,
full-time faculty at U.S. colleges and universities are needed for a
study on researchers’ knowledge of the United States federal
guidelines for the protection of human research participants as they
relate to research in language and linguistics. Participants will fill
out a survey that asks questions about their experience with
Institutional Review Boards (IRBs) and asks them to consider
hypothetical research summaries and judge whether or not they
constitute research with human participants. Participants must meet
the following criteria:
• they must be full-time faculty at a college or university in
the United States
• they must conduct research with human research participants in
a field related to language and linguistics
• they must have prepared and submitted at least one IRB
application to your institution’s IRB within the past five years (2020
- present)
Interested participants can click on the following link to access the
consent form and survey:

The survey will be open until October 15, 2024.
Many thanks for your help!
