Meeting Description:

There are quite a number of reasons for undertaking a collective
review of standards in French and French linguistics.
First, the social dimension. The focus on prescriptive standards comes
at a time when inequalities, including those related to language
skills, are a cause for concern.
Secondly, the didactic dimension. The issue of a standard variety (le
français de référence) to be taught as a first language and also in
French foreign language course is arising in France as in the rest of
the world. However, in teaching as in research, the notion of
‘standard French’ is problematic. As far as linguistic descriptions
are concerned, we are also seeing a counter-productive widening of the
gap between specialists who study French in situ and those who do so
at a distance.
Thirdly, recent publications such as La grande grammaire du français
and La grande grammaire historique du français. We believe that it
would be useful to analyse the criteria used to select and classify
the variants (dialectal and others) used in these and other works, as
well as the theoretical treatment given to them. At the same time, the
aim would be to take stock of the data on which studies of French are
based, to assess the empirical adequacy of the existing descriptions,
and to question the basis and relevance of the grammaticality
judgements made by their authors.
Other point: the spectacular advances in Natural Language Processing
(NLP) and Artificial Intelligence (AI). We would like to use the
symposium to explore the way in which standards are embedded in word
processing software and measure their impact on editorial practices.
A final reason for reopening the vast field of standards is our lack
of knowledge about the effects of standards on usage and on the
linguistic system.

Call for Papers:

Abstracts (Times New Roman, 12 pt, single-spaced) should be between
5,000 and 7,000 characters long and should be accompanied by a
reference list of no more than six references (authors should avoid
citing their own work as far as possible, in order to preserve the
anonymity of their proposal).

Deadline: September 30, 2024
