From: Jon Paul Sank [retiarius7 at yahoo.com]
Subject: new name for online linguistics glossary

Sank's Glossary of Linguistics now announces its new, convenient
domain name, purchased on March 28.
Hitherto, we have all been typing the longer and clunkier:
studylove.org/ling/jpsgloss.html
Effective immediately, we now merely type or tap exactly nine (9)
keystrokes including Enter:
sgol.org
The new name is just a quick redirect to the same old location. The
longer address will keep functioning.
Other SGOL news items:
* SGOL will soon reach the milestone of expansion to one hundred (100)
long pages. (Each long page is about as long as a shorter book
chapter.) Should SGOL now be called a dictionary or encyclopedia?
Reasoning: (1) A glossary is a partial dictionary. (2) No dictionary
or encyclopedia will ever cover linguistics completely without a rapid
accumulation of gaps. (3) Ergo, the name "Glossary" will remain.
* Sank has been adding many, many reference links. Visitors to the
site now have the opportunity to read the works of a large multitude
of scholars. Some Glossary entries are bristling with links to hours
of available further reading. The links are kept small and compact in
order to minimize visual disruption.
* Given all of the links being added, a strong effort has been made,
since early 2024, to comply with copyrights. Hence, some links go to
publishers, while other links, happily, go to open-access resources.
* SGOL now has 24 rotating items that show up its "Tips" box. Some
Tips are instructions; others, suggestions; others, notices; others,
general SGOL background information. Each time the site is modified,
the next Tip appears.
* A small but growing number of entries each have a situation where
Sank sought but failed to find any definitions of a term. So the entry
was made by collecting examples of the term's use and presenting them
in a reverse chronological order, perhaps revealing something about
the term's evolution.
* Sank has been adding subtle bits of color, mostly to examples, in
order to boost rapid comprehension.
DISCLOSURE: SGOL is not affiliated with any institution or company.
Sank disavows any allegiance to a particular theory, saying, "All
theories are fun to get acquainted with." SGOL does not receive
funding or donations. It sells nothing and advertises nothing. Labor
is all volunteer.
