Call for Papers:
Bringing together researchers and practitioners, this conference is
the capstone event of the HEA-funded project Gender Equality in
Language Studies (GELS), the first study of its kind in Ireland which
investigates the gendering of Language Studies as an academic
discipline. This national research project, led by Maynooth University
in collaboration with three typologically different partner
universities (Munster Technological University, Trinity College
Dublin, and the University of Limerick), has formed clusters across
Ireland with participating post-primary schools. Grounded in the
empirical data generated within each cluster’s schools and university,
the project aims principally to interrogate the discursive
feminisation of the Language Studies discipline in Ireland with a view
to offering disruptive counter-discourses to temper the impact of such
gendering in order to foster greater diversity and broader
participation.
Abstracts are invited for 20-minute papers, in English and/or in
Irish, that explore any aspect of gendering in language education
and/or other disciplines with converse gender dynamics. While
submissions that engage with contemporary and emerging theoretical and
methodological approaches to understanding converse gender dynamics in
Language Studies and the discursive gendering of this discipline are
of particular interest and strongly encouraged, submissions from
disciplines with similar gender dynamics (e.g. Education, Nursing,
Social Studies, Speech & Language Therapy, Early Childhood Studies)
are also most welcome.
Areas for investigation may include, but are not limited to, the
following:
• Gender inequality in language teaching and learning
• Representation of Language Studies and Gender in the media
• Gender inequality in language(s) choice in secondary and tertiary
education
• Feminisation of the language-teaching profession
• Gender and language-in-education policy
• Gender in language-learning materials and resources
• Language Skills, Gender and the labour market
• Gender in Teacher Education
• Student Engagement, Subject Offering and Gender in DEIS schools
• Gender-responsive pedagogy
