Description:

About DrivenData:
DrivenData harnesses machine learning to tackle real-world challenges
with social impact. For over a decade, our team of data scientists and
engineers has used data to drive progress in public health, education,
international development, and civic technology.
This project focuses on a critical gap in Automatic Speech Recognition
(ASR) technology: children's speech. Unlike adult speech, children's
speech varies in pronunciation, fluency, and developmental
patterns—making it harder for standard ASR models to interpret. By
advancing speech-to-text technology tailored for children, we can
unlock new possibilities in early learning from skill assessments to
teacher coaching.
About the Role:
We are seeking a detail-oriented and motivated individual to work with
our team as a Phonetic Transcriber. This is a completely remote,
flexible position that allows you to work on your own schedule. As a
phonetic transcriber, you will be responsible for transcribing child
speech using the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA), performing
reliability checks, and participating in transcriber meetings.
This role is ideal for those with an academic background or current
studies in linguistics, communication disorders, or related fields.
This job is designed to work around class schedules or other
responsibilities, making it ideal for undergraduate and graduate
students.
Responsibilities:
Transcribe child speech phonetically using the International Phonetic
Alphabet (IPA)
Perform reliability checks with other transcribers to ensure
consistency and accuracy
Participate in regular transcriber meetings to address questions,
discuss progress, and review transcription standards
Maintain a high level of accuracy and attention to detail in all
transcriptions
Requirements:
Completed a university-level phonetics, phonology, or transcription
course
Comfortable with transcribing using the International Phonetic
Alphabet (IPA)
Reliable internet connection and access to a computer
Ability to manage time effectively and meet deadlines in a remote,
self-paced environment
Familiarity with Praat Software
Must be a natural person who is legally able to receive payment in the
United States, at least 18 years old (and of legal age in their
jurisdiction), not located in sanctioned countries/regions as
designated by the U.S. Office of Foreign Assets Control, and not a
resident of the Russian Federation.
Preferred skills:
Bachelor’s degree in Linguistics, Communication Disorders, or a
related field, or currently pursuing such a degree
Experience working with child speech
Knowledge of American dialect variation
Native English speaker
Familiarity or interest in speech pathologies
Why Join Us:
Flexible remote work with the freedom to set your own hours
Gain experience in a specialized field of linguistics and child speech
transcription
Work with a supportive, collaborative team
Help make education technology accessible to every child
Contribute to creating a resource that will improve developmental
speech research
Competitive pay at $15 per hour
8-16 hours of work available per week
How to Apply:
If you're passionate about linguistics, child speech, and
transcription work, we'd love to hear from you! Please submit your
resume and a brief cover letter outlining your qualifications and
experience here.
During the hiring process, you may also be asked for references and to
complete a brief take-home transcription task (~30 minutes).
