The Faculty of Humanities and the Centre for Sociocultural and
Ethnolinguistic Studies of the HSE University are pleased to announce
an interdisciplinary conference on “Managing language diversity
through Societies, States and History” to be held online on June 06,
2025. The conference aims to bring together scholars, researchers, and
professionals from various disciplines to explore the historical,
legal, and social dynamics related to language diversity. We invite
the submission of papers that address, but are not limited to, the
following topics:
1. Multilingualism and Governance: Historical and Contemporary Models
Historical analysis of language policies adopted by various states
toward linguistic minorities, examining how these policies have
influenced linguistic communities over time.
Study of how different states have managed multilingualism within
their borders, including historical and contemporary examples of
multilingual policies and their sociolinguistic implications.
2. Right to Language: Legal Protection of Linguistic Minorities
Examination of the legal frameworks protecting minority languages and
the linguistic rights of minority communities, including analyses of
international conventions and national legislation.
Exploration of the role of minority languages during conflicts and
humanitarian crises, evaluating human rights considerations and the
protection of linguistic minorities in historical and contemporary
contexts.
3. Language Diversity and Cultural Identity
Exploration of the relationship between multilingualism and the
cultural identity of communities, emphasizing the importance of
languages in preserving cultural identity.
Analysis of language’s influence on cognition
Language as a “storage” for different semiotic systems
Ethnodifferential and ethnointegrative functions of language
Language and identity
4. Endangered and Extinct Languages and Language Revitalization
Processes
Analysis of extinct and endangered languages, along with initiatives
for their revitalization, considering the historical context of
language disappearance and current language revitalization programs.
Submission Guidelines:
We kindly remind you that the working language of the Conference is
English. All presentations are to be done in English. Interested
