ELEVENTH BRNO CONFERENCE ON LINGUISTICS STUDIES IN ENGLISH 2025
Where theory meets practice: Advances in English linguistics
Brno, Masaryk University, 8-9 September 2025
CALL FOR PAPERS
The Department of English Language and Literature, Faculty of
Education, Masaryk University, Brno, Czech Republic is pleased to
announce its traditional biennial linguistic conference, which will
take place in Brno on 8-9 September 2025.
The Eleventh Brno Conference on Linguistics Studies in English will be
held under the title Where theory meets practice: Advances in English
linguistics. We would like to welcome contributions that look into
various aspects of the English language through the prism of its
application, whether for general communication or in diverse
professional settings, research, entertainment, study and teaching.
Language is seen as a living organism that constantly changes as a
result of multiple external and internal factors, and it is the role
of linguistic research to identify and describe these factors and
interpret their impact on the language.
The conference will thus focus on the complex interplay between the
communicative needs of language users, various parameters of the
communicative situation and properties of the English language as
such, along with a multitude of theoretical approaches and methods
that can be used to better understand and explain it. A special
emphasis will be laid on pedagogical implications of such study of the
English language. We consider as essential that different theoretical
perspectives assist and inspire one another, reflecting thus the
plurality of opinions and interests in the fast-developing and often
conflicting contemporary world.
Our plenary speakers are
- Ruth Breeze, University of Navarra, Spain
Researching emotions in discourse: How can corpus linguistics help?
- Milan Ferenčík
How to do things with pragmatics in public space: Using public signage
as a resource for learning pragmatics
We particularly welcome contributions focusing on:
- corpus-based discourse analysis
- cross-cultural and cross-linguistic research
- multimedia genres and digital discourses
- pragmatics of English language discourse
- pedagogical implications of linguistic research
- construction and patterns of meaning
- variation across disciplines and genres
- English as a global and international language
- study of specialised discourses
The conference will be held completely in-person, and its working
language is English.
A detailed programme of the conference will be available at the
conference website after the submission and acceptance of proposals.
