Special Qualifications: Applicants must be currently enrolled for
Honours, Masters or PhD in Linguistics or an associated Language area.
Very recent graduates who have graduated within the last two years are
also eligible to apply. Applications are welcome from any part of the
world, especially Africa.
Focus: This school is aimed at postgraduate students who are
interested in working with linguistics data in some form -- especially
morphosyntactic and/or phonological data -- using corpus, experimental
or theoretical approaches. You do not need to have a background or
already be using these methods or theories to participate in the
classes but you need to have a solid basis in General Linguistics and
ideally some experience of collecting and working with linguistic
data.
Description:
The Seshegopuo Linguistics Winter School is a postgraduate training
initiative that brings together early-career linguists and
postgraduate students from across Africa and beyond for an immersive,
intellectually stimulating week of engagement with linguistic data.
What sets this school apart is its emphasis on African languages, its
commitment to methodological openness, and its grounding in real-world
data analysis—from theoretical explorations to corpus and experimental
work.
Tuition: Free
Tuition Explanation: The Winter School is free to attend for all
accepted postgraduate students and recent graduates. There are no
tuition or registration fees, and participants will be provided with
lunch and teas during the week. A limited number of travel and
accommodation bursaries are available, with priority given to
applicants from African institutions and those without access to
institutional funding.
Financial Aid Applications accepted until 15-May-2025
A limited number of scholarships are available to contribute toward
travelling expenses of selected participants. Applicants are judged
on basis of need, qualification, ability to participate, access to
funding, etc.
