Introduction
Digital technologies—especially Free Software and Open-Source AI—offer
transformative potential for democratizing knowledge in the Humanities
and Social Sciences (HSS). This special issue explores how open
digital commons can foster epistemic justice, bridge linguistic
divides, and empower diverse knowledge systems through collaborative
approaches. We invite global perspectives on ethical AI integration in
education and research.
Thematic Axes (but not limited to):
1. Open Digital Commons as Collaborative Spaces
Governance models for inclusive knowledge sharing: Protecting cultural
sovereignty in open-source ecosystems.
2. AI for Linguistic Justice & Language Teaching
Co-developing NLP/OCR tools for marginalized languages; AI
applications in language preservation and pedagogy.
3. Decolonizing Technology in Education
Integrating open-source AI tools in HSS curricula: critical digital
literacy for hermeneutic scholars.
4. Ethical AI Development & Auditing
Detecting algorithmic biases; designing culturally responsive
interfaces for global contexts.
5. Inclusive Research Infrastructures
Sustainable platforms for cross-cultural collaboration; strengthening
South-South knowledge networks.
6. Participatory Knowledge Creation
Co-designing digital tools with communities; equitable integration of
academic and local knowledge.
7. AI's Societal Impact in HSS
Ethical frameworks for dematerialized scholarship; technology's role
in epistemic equity.
